Dr Gerjan Piet is senior scientist marine ecology at Wageningen Marine Research (WMR). He started his career with a focus on the ecosystem impacts of fisheries and the development of an ecosystem approach to fisheries management but has expanded this to include the effects of all human activities and their pressures on the ecosystem and its capacity to supply services. As such he now works mostly in interdisciplinary projects involving cumulative impacts assessments to inform ecosystem-based management and marine spatial planning with an aim to achieve sustainability and conserve biodiversity.
